Born Where Pearls Begin
A family story from Zhuji, carried forward for modern women.
I was born and raised in Zhuji, Zhejiang—the heart of China’s freshwater pearl industry.
I grew up in a family that has worked with pearls for generations. Some of my earliest memories are of watching my grandmother care for freshwater pearl mussels.
She was one of the strongest women I knew—patient, hardworking, and quietly determined. She taught me that beautiful things are not created overnight. Like a pearl, they are formed slowly through time, care, and resilience.
After graduating from university, I returned home to help my family with the pearl business. I learned how to select, match, and understand pearls—not simply as materials, but as small treasures shaped by nature and human hands.
For more than half a century, Zhuji’s pearl industry has grown from family-run farms into the world’s largest freshwater pearl hub. Today, the region represents around 80% of China’s and 70% of the global freshwater pearl market.
But to me, pearls have never been only about an industry. They carry the story of my grandmother, my family, and the place where I grew up.
I founded LumiSerene to carry this heritage forward in a more modern and meaningful way. I want freshwater pearls to become more than jewelry saved for formal occasions. I want them to become personal pieces that women can wear through everyday life.
